Let's Talk Lips: Signature Color

Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Having a signature lip color has always been on my bucket list. I think about 1950s housewives in hair curlers, prepping for the day & putting a deep red color on their lips on a regular ol' Monday. I think about Southern women in wide brimmed hats, heading out for church on a Sunday morning & popping on a bright pink lip to accompany their dresses. I think lipstick is so classic. So much so that i've devised my own plan to find a signature color to sport on a regular ol' Monday.
Lip color is often seasonal. Maroon in the winter, fuchsia in the Spring, coral in the summer, berry in the Fall... but what about a color that can be worn each season? Finding a color that compliments your look regardless of the time of the year can be tricky, but step one is figuring out which shades compliment your skin tone. In my case, I have a fair/beige skin tone which can become medium/beige in the summer months. Because of this, I need to stick to shades which enhance the features of a medium skin tone. These shades include plums, berry pinks & deep reds. Since my natural lip color is a deeper pink, I need to stay away from nudes & light pinks because they will wash my complexion out. Also, going lighter than your natural lip color will make the blending process much more difficult. The next step is to find a good lip liner to go under your chosen lip color. You can pick a shade that matches the lipstick you've chosen or find one that is similar to your own natural lip color. I choose the latter because on a daily basis, I don't need such extreme and bold color on my lips.

As for topping off with gloss, I suggest blotting the lipstick with a Kleenex first so you get a more natural look before adding another layer. I've noticed when I choose not to blot before adding gloss, I have layered/cakey looking lips which are not confidence boosting!

The color i've chosen as the best contender for my signature color is Tarte's Aqua-Gel Hydrating Lip Tint in Graceful (Berry Pink). $14 HERE.
What's your signature lip/confidence boosting color?
